Following the victory of the Democratic Party of Japan, Daisuke Ishihara, Portfolio Specialist at Chuo Mitsui Trust International comments on how some new actions have affected the financial markets. “Sectors such as construction and cement are proving to be weak because some spokesmen for the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) have consistently made negative remarks regarding public investment. A review of the revised budget is currently on the cards and the effects this may have on the economy if implemented are a cause of concern. “Financial company shares have also suffered because the new minister for the financial services, Shizuka Kamei, announced the introduction of a system in which small and mid size companies will have more time to repay their loans. “At this moment, the market is responding sensitively to any statements made by government officials that might impact negatively, reflecting the deep-rooted unease about how the DPJ will run the government.”
