Offshore Banking Guide

Will

Legal document that determines how all your possessions and assets will be distributed upon your death.
Although making a will is not a legal requirement, if you are a non-resident, you should consider writing one in both the UK and your country of residence, which will probably have different rules for the disposal of your estate.

Withholding tax

Tax levied at source on dividends paid to investors who are non-resident in the country in which the investment is made.
For example, all income earned by foreigners on Swiss-based investments is subject to a 35 per cent withholding tax.
In many cases, Switzerland has double taxation treaties with foreign governments, which mean investors from those countries are able to ‘claw back’ withholding tax.
Plans to introduce European-wide withholding taxes would be beneficial to Switzerland.

Offshore Banking Guide - With Profits Policies

With-profits policies
A with-profits policy is a low-risk investment product. Offered by life insurers, with-profits promise a reversionary bonus, paid yearly.
Once you have made your payment, the insurer takes your money and invests it in a mixture of equities, bonds and cash. In return you get a guaranteed yearly bonus and a lump sum upon maturity.
Each year that the investments over-perform, part of the surplus will be set aside to pay your final bonus. However, if the fund is failing to perform, then the manager concerned will invest in more defensive assets, and the long-term success of the fund is likely to be compromised.

Yield
Measure of a return you receive on an investment. To calculate the yield, divide the dividend you receive by the cost of the investment, then multiply by 100.

Offshore Banking Guide & Zero-Coupon Bond

Zero-coupon bond
A bond that pays no dividend, but increases the capital base. For example, you might buy a bond at 60 and redeem it at 200, but there would be no dividend payments along the way.
